About Jeff Goulden
Nature has inspired me for as long as I can remember. As a child growing up in Washington State, I spent countless hours exploring my backyard and nearby wooded ravines, lakes, and abandoned railroad beds. Those small adventures sparked a deep appreciation for the natural world and a curiosity that has stayed with me ever since.
From those early explorations as a young child to the places I visit today, being in nature has always brought me a sense of peace, joy, and serenity. Decades later, the sights and sounds of the natural world can still evoke those same feelings I experienced as a child.
When I was thirteen, I received a Kodak Brownie camera for my birthday. Until then, exploring nature had been about discovering new places. The camera gave me a way to document what I found and eventually share it with others. Photography has been part of my life ever since.
For more than five decades, I've explored the mountains, deserts, forests, and national parks of the American West. Along the way, I've come to realize that every landscape has a story to tell. Sometimes it's written in the geology of an ancient canyon. Sometimes it's revealed in the behavior of wildlife or the natural processes that shape the landscape.
Every mountain trail, wilderness landscape and wildlife encounter I have experienced has been an opportunity to discover something new.
The stories often emerge from the photographs themselves. As I work with my photographs, questions begin to emerge. What am I looking at? How did this landscape form? What forces shaped it? How has life adapted to it? I often follow those questions with further research. Somewhere along the way, the photographs begin to tell a story.
After earning degrees in Business Administration and Information Science from Pacific Lutheran University, I spent my professional career as a software developer. The analytical thinking that served me throughout my career now helps me interpret the landscapes I photograph, seek to understand the natural processes that shape them, and share those discoveries with others.
Today, my photography and writing go hand in hand. Through my monthly Substack articles, I enjoy sharing the geology, ecology, and natural history behind the places I visit. My hope is that my readers will come away with not only a greater appreciation for the photography, but also a deeper understanding of the remarkable landscapes of the American West.
My photography is represented by Getty Images and has appeared in National Geographic, Audubon, Sunset, Sierra Club, and numerous books, calendars, brochures, websites, and advertising campaigns. Whether my images are used to inspire travel, support conservation, or simply bring the beauty of nature into someone's home, I hope they encourage others to explore, appreciate, and help preserve the natural beauty of the American West.
