Monument Valley, straddling the Arizona–Utah border, is administered by the Navajo Nation and offers some of the most iconic landscapes of the American Southwest. The desert’s harsh emptiness is punctuated by towering sandstone buttes and mesas, whose colors and textures “pop” at sunrise and sunset. Through photography, these dramatic formations are captured in a way that highlights the play of light, shadow, and the enduring spirit of the land.

Known as Tse Bii’ Ndzisgaii, or “valley of the rocks,” Monument Valley’s formations are eroded remnants of ancient sandstone layers once covering the region. Though often called a valley, the landscape is mostly flat, interrupted by isolated rock structures rising hundreds of feet. Famous in film, advertising, and photography, the area epitomizes the Old West while retaining deep cultural and spiritual significance for the Navajo people. Visitors explore the park via a 17-mile scenic loop with stops at East and West Mitten Buttes, Merrick Butte, John Ford’s Point, and other notable formations.
